Image Compressor

Compress an image in your browser and download a smaller JPEG, WebP, or PNG file.

Image Compression: Reduce File Size Without Guessing

Large images can slow page rendering, use more mobile data, and consume storage or email attachment space. Compression is most effective when you start from a high-quality original and choose a target that suits the image’s purpose. A product thumbnail, a full-width hero image, and a photograph sent in a message rarely need identical settings.

Choose a format and quality

WebP is a useful default for many web images because it often balances quality and file size. JPEG is broadly compatible for photographs but does not preserve transparency. PNG is appropriate for logos, screenshots, and sharp edges, though it may produce larger files for photographic content. Lowering quality can shrink JPEG and WebP output, but inspect fine text, gradients, and faces before accepting it.

A reliable workflow

Select the original, choose an output format, and test a moderate quality setting first. Compare both dimensions and file size after downloading. If the result looks soft or shows blocky artifacts, raise quality or use a larger source. Keep the original untouched until the compressed copy has been checked in its real destination.

Privacy and limitations

This tool uses browser image capabilities, so selected images are processed on your device rather than uploaded to a paid image API. Browser support and metadata handling can vary. Animated images may be reduced to a single frame, and converting a transparent image to JPEG replaces transparency with a solid background. Always confirm the exported file before publishing.
